Questions people ask
- How many outs does a flush draw have?
- 9. There are 13 cards in each suit and you can see 4 of yours (two in your hand, two on the board), so 9 are left. That's about 35% to hit by the river from the flop, and 19.6% with one card to come.
- How many outs does an open-ended straight draw have?
- 8: four cards of the rank at each end. About 31.5% to hit by the river from the flop, and 17.4% with one card to come.
- What is a gutshot?
- A straight draw missing one card in the middle, like 8-9-_-J-Q. Only one rank completes it, so it has 4 outs: about 16.5% by the river from the flop, and 8.7% with one card to come.
- What are clean outs?
- Outs that give you the best hand without also helping your opponent. A card that completes your straight but puts four of a suit on the board may not be clean, so good players discount those.
- What if I have a flush draw and a straight draw?
- Count each card once. A flush draw plus an open-ended straight draw is 15 outs (9 + 8, minus the 2 cards counted twice): about 54% to hit by the river from the flop, so you're the favourite.
