Questions people ask
- How often do aces beat kings?
- About 82% of the time when both are all-in before the flop. Kings win about 18%, mostly by making a set or a straight or flush.
- Is ace-king better than a pair of queens?
- No. All-in before the flop, pocket queens win about 57% against ace-king offsuit, and about 54% against ace-king of the same suit. Ace-king is still a very strong hand; it just needs to pair or better to beat queens.
- What is a coin flip in poker?
- A small pair against two higher cards, like 2-2 against A-K. The pair wins about 53% of the time, so it's close to 50/50, but the pair is a slight favourite.
- What are the best and worst starting hands?
- Against one random hand, pocket aces win about 85% of the time. The weakest hand, 3-2 offsuit, still wins about 32%: any two cards have a chance heads-up. Against four random hands, aces drop to about 56%.
- Why is my equity different from how often I win?
- Equity assumes every card is dealt and nobody bets again. In a real hand, players fold, and bets on later streets change how much you win or lose. Ties count as a share of the pot.
- How strong is a flush draw against top pair?
- It depends on the cards. With A♥5♥ against K♣Q♦ on a K♥9♥2♣ flop, the nut flush draw wins about 46% of the time by the river: nearly even, because the ace can also pair.
